![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Later - after Nicaise's death in Prince's Gambit, it is confirmed that they were in fact rather close and that Laurent had been trying to break Nicaise's trust in the Regent as to keep him safe. At first, Damen sees it as hateful and overly competitive, thinks Laurent is antagonizing a child. He has developed an interesting relationship with Laurent. In that time he's been a favorite of the Regent, and has grown confident in his position at the palace - later, we learn, too confident. Nicaise has been a pet at Arles for three years by the time Captive Prince begins. According to Laurent, Nicaise was a poor little boy before he became the Regent's pet, and didn't have many other choices in work. Not very much is known about Nicaise's history. His signature accessory is a long earring in his left ear, twin sapphires dangled, heavy and almost brushing his shoulder, which he gifts to Laurent in Captive Prince and Laurent uses to disguise himself in Prince's Gambit. ![]() He wears loose-fitting clothing, as well as many different types of jewels in a style befitting a pet and bells attached to his throat, "like a cat". Nicaise has curly brown hair, blue eyes, and fair skin. ![]() ![]() ![]() As with most pre-teens and teenagers, she's often angst-ridden. The child, remembered by her adult self, is no sort of angel. The first-person narrator simply states at one point that her father has told her that her grandmother couldn't live much longer-and that the father will notify the child when the grandmother dies. This is not a spoiler, since the woman was elderly and frail even at the beginning. For example, the 'Jewish' grandmother (not Jewish by her own standards, but according to the 'racial' definition of the Nuremberg laws) does die in this book. Other things, however, seem to have been deliberately elided. Leaving out things the child hadn't known is arguably a sensible decision, although there should have been more footnotes providing updates. The author leaves out a lot of things she discovered later (for example, her father was undoubtedly forced to divorce her mother, because this was required by the Nuremberg Laws of 1934). ![]() Despite the fulsome blurb and the slightly less uncritical Foreword, this is not a particularly extraordinary book. ![]() ![]() The Devil was clearly afraid of the martyr’s tongue, and this was the proof of the latter’s victory.Ĥ. Yet a stronger, spiritual voice was now heard speaking in his mouth. A doctor was appointed to sever the martyr’s tongue. He thus had his tongue cut out, in order that the martyr’s followers might be deprived of his voice and teaching.ģ. ![]() The Devil decided not to subject him to martyrdom, lest it had the opposite effect. His activity inspired great courage among the Christians, and reversed their flight. Romanos publicly declared the faith, encouraging and strengthening martyrs, and causing the repentance of apostates. ![]() It was an era of severe persecution, when many were martyred in manifold ways. It is remarkable that the Devil chose to have his tongue cut, rather than any other torment. Romanos is distinguished for the great love he demonstrated in his martyrdom. Love makes us disciples of Christ even without martyrdom. Their suffering and glory are equally experienced by the whole church, since Christians and martyrs are members of the same body. ![]() The memory of the martyrs is a cause of joy for the church.
